A Cire Perdue: The Art of Bronze Casting by Brigitte Boss
What is A Cire Perdue?
A Cire Perdue, also known as the “lost wax method,” is a traditional technique used to create bronze sculptures. This centuries-old method allows artists to capture complex details and create timeless sculptures. Sculptor Brigitte Boss, who specializes in creating sculptures of horses and dogs, works with this technique in collaboration with craftsmen such as moldmakers, bronze casters and patiners.

The Process.
1. The Beginning: A Sculpture in Wax or Clay
Brigitte begins her creative process by making a model in wax or clay. With her years of experience, she knows how to capture movement, anatomy and emotions down to the smallest detail. Her models, such as a galloping horse or a sitting dog, form the basis of each bronze artwork.
2. The Mould: Created by the Mouleur.
The finished model is turned over to a mouleur, a craftsman who makes a mold out of silicone and epoxy. This mold captures every detail of the model and is a crucial step in the process. Making a perfect mold is essential, as it will later be used to create the wax model.
3. The Lost-Wax Phase.
A wax copy of the original sculpture is made with the mold. This wax image is then encased in a ceramic mold. By heating the mold, the wax melts away, creating a hollow space that exactly matches the original model.
4. Casting the Bronze: Collaboration with the Bronze Caster.
The molten bronze, heated to over 1,000 degrees Celsius, is poured into the ceramic mold by an experienced bronze caster. This process requires close monitoring to ensure that the sculpture contains no irregularities or air bubbles. After cooling and curing, the ceramic mold is removed, and the bronze statue emerges.
5. Cissing and Patination: The Fine Finish.
Finishing the bronze sculpture, also known as chasing, is a careful process in which Brigitte and the bronze caster work together. This involves removing blemishes and further refining details. Finally, the sculpture is patinated: chemical processes and heat give the bronze a unique color and depth. The result is a timeless work of art with a lively appearance.
6. A Timeless Work of Art.
The end result is a bronze sculpture that exudes power, movement and emotion. Brigitte’s sculptures of horses and dogs are praised for their vibrancy and authenticity, and each piece is a tribute to the animals she captures.
