Haflinger horse sculptures.
The haflinger is a breed of horse originating from the village of Hafling in South Tyrol. This breed is known for its frugality. This means that it does not place high demands on its diet to maintain its weight. Haflingers were often used as draught and pack horses in the mountains.
Born in South Tyrol in Austria.
The progenitor of all haflinger horses was born in South Tyrol in Austria. The breed owes its later name to the village of Hafling. In 1874, the stallion ‘Folie 249’ was born in the Vinschgau region from a native mare and the Arabian thoroughbred El Bedavi XXII. Since 1899, the breed was kept purebred with subsidies and strict breeding selections. Seven bloodlines emerged among the haflinger stallions: A with Anselmo as progenitor, B with Bolzano, M with Massimo, N with Nibbio, S with Stelvio , ST with Student, W with Willy.
The inbreeding of Arabian blood gave the haflinger its noble characteristics, such as an expressive head and hard legs. In 1961, the first haflinger horses were brought to the Netherlands after which the breed quickly gained fame and popularity and was able to prove itself as a very versatile breed.
The haflinger is a horse breed that can be used in many areas of equestrian sports. The horse is used under saddle, both for dressage and western riding, in harness and as a show horse for liberty dressage demonstrations.
